Survey of LMA collections completed - August 2012
Posted: 20 August 2012
The survey stage of the Pensions Archive Trust's Research Guide Project was completed in August. The survey, carried out by volunteer Malcolm Deering, has been on-going since August 2011, and has seen Malcolm checking catalogues of London Metropolitan Archives' 5800 collections for material relating to pensions and provision for old age.
A wide range of fascinating material has been uncovered, providing an insight into the early development of occupational pension schemes in a variety of companies and organisations across London. The survey also shows the range of pensions and other support provided to the aged poor by charities and other organisations, prior to the establishment of the state pension or the widespread provision of workplace pensions.
Some examples of some of the material uncovered in the survey can be found in the History of Pensions pages of the Pensions Archive Trust’s website, but the full survey findings will be collated together to produce a Guide for researchers. This research guide is currently being compiled by PAT Archivist Katy Johnson.
