Research Guide to LMA's collections published - April 2013

Posted: 3 April 2013

The Pensions Archive Trust launched a project to survey the extensive collections held by London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) for material relating to pensions in 2011. The surveying work was carried out by volunteer Malcolm Deering, who painstakingly checked through catalogue entries for each of 5800+ collections held by LMA to identify material relating to the provision of pensions or other support in old age.

The survey results have now been collated into a Research Guide which is available on the PAT website. The guide is broken down into 12 main sections and a miscellaneous category. Each section includes a brief introduction to the category of pension or provision and a list of relevant collections or pension funds. In many cases a brief introduction to the pension fund and its history is also provided.

It is hoped that this Guide will be a valuable resource for academics and other parties interested in locating historic material relating to the history of the provision of occupational pensions in the UK, and to developing a wider understanding of pensions' significance to social history.

More information on the project can be found on the Volunteering pages of the website, and Malcolm's report on his work on the project can be read here.
