How is the Pensions Archive funded?

The partnership with London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) primarily requires The Pensions Archive Trust (PAT) to fund the cost of employing a dedicated project archivist.  The other particular expense relates to the establishment and maintenance of the PAT website and the associated cost of digitization of archive materials.

To fund this, an appeal has secured pledges of financial support, both by way of one-off donations and annual subscriptions.  While the Trust welcomes one-off donations, donors are encouraged to commit themselves to an annual commitment to cover ongoing annual expenditure.  To encourage financial support, the titles of Patron, Sponsor and Supporter are being offered to those who pledge annual contributions for at least five years:

Patron:   £5,000 per annum or more
Sponsor:  £2,500 to £4,999 per annum;
Supporter:  £1,000 to £2,499 per annum.

The Pensions Archive Trust has already received donations from a number of prominent organizations in the pensions field, namely:

  • Abacus Lighting
  • Aon Consulting
  • Barnett Waddingham
  • BP Pension Trustees
  • Higham Dunnett Shaw
  • GlaxoSmithKline
  • HSBC Actuaries and Consultants
  • Morgan Stanley Investment Management
  • Pensions Research Accountants Group
  • Societe Generale Asset Management
  • The Law Debenture Trust Corporation
  • The National Association of Pension Funds
  • The Occupational Pensions Defence Union
  • UBS Global Asset Management

Together, these are sufficient to enable the Trust to enter into the arrangement with the LMA and in particular to fund the employment of the project archivist for at least the first three years.

While the Trust is empowered to charge for access to the Pensions Archive, no charge is made for bona fide researchers, students and other beneficiaries.  However, users are asked to make some reasonable contribution towards the added cost of extraction, analysis or copying of materials on their behalf from the Archive.  The normal LMA scale charges will apply for this purpose, possibly with an additional handling fee for copying, to be passed on to the Trust.  Similarly, the normal LMA scale rates apply for research work, or charged separately where carried out by Trust personnel.
