George Ross Goobey

Between 2008 and 2014, the Pensions Archive was fortunate enough to receive the papers of the late George Henry Ross Goobey (1911-1999), the first manager of the Imperial Tobacco Pension Fund and a leading light in the development of equity investment by pension funds. He was also a popular speaker delivering papers at national pensions and financial sector conferences as well as giving speeches to local organisations across the country. In January 2019 an extended collection of digitised images of Ross Goobey’s remarkable speeches and papers on the topics of pensions and investments were made available online. These can be viewed below. The digitised speeches and papers are highlights from Ross Goobey’s files and therefore only a partial reflection of the wider archive collection. Despite being such an influential figure, George Ross Goobey's investment approach has been difficult to study because he published relatively little, being content to exercise his considerable talents within the Imperial Group, the National Association of Pension Funds and other sector bodies.  Ross Goobey's papers to the trustees of the Imperial Tobacco Pension Fund and other organisations therefore now provide additional information on his investment philosophy, as well as constituting a contribution to the available historical records regarding pension fund investment from 1950s to 1980s.
